Student designers shovel the first dirt for their Community Schoolyard
On May 28, we broke ground on a Community Schoolyard at Whittier Elementary School in Scranton. After two years of planning and design, it's starting to happen! Here are some photos of the day.

Scranton School District Superintendent Erin Keating spoke of the need for kids' activities that get them off their screens

Scranton Mayor Paige Cognetti lauded the student designers for their applying their skills and creativity to the project

Trust for Public Land Pennsylvania Director Elizabeth Class-Maldonado thanked the partners that made this project happen. Those in attendance included the Scranton School Board, Scranton Area Community Foundation, Hawk Family Foundation, Spitz Foundation, and PPL Foundation.
VIM Project Manager Alyssa Kelley, who taught the participatory design classes at the school, thanked the students for keeping the community in mind when they created their design. The students knew this playground would be primarily for other kids!
